Wolfram/Alpha
Spend some time looking at wolfram
alpha. Check out the examples to get an idea of what it can do.
Use both wolfram
alpha and google to try and determine the answer to the following questions. For each one, state the answer, and say which tool was the most useful or fastest in finding the answer.
1. All english words containing the letters "eue"
2. How much potassium in 4.7 oz of banana?
3. How old was Barack Obama on the day you were born?
4. Date and time of the next total solar eclipse in Eugene?
5. What is the minimum and maximum price of google stock since it went public?
6. Link an image of the barcode for UPC 01234567890
7. How many vertices does an icosahedron have?
8. Distance from Eugene to Tokyo?
9. Average Oregon income per capita?
10. What is the Morse code for your first name?
1. Wolfram: queue, queues, queued
Google: queue, queues, queued, found
2. Wolfram: 477 mg
3. 24 years, 1 month, 28 days
4. 11:25 Monday, August 21st, 2017
5. Wolfram: minimum is $306.57, maximum is $629.51
6.
7. 12 (Wolfram)
8. 4,886 miles
9. $40,040/ year

Internet Censorship
Internet censorship has become quite an issue. It seems that the most commonly used sites on the internet are search engines. So, I went to a few different search engines to see what results I would get by typing in the exact same terms into all of them. This way, we kind of get a sense of what search engines censor more than others. The search engines that I compared were Google, Bing, Baidu, and Google.cn.
The four search terms that I used were:
1. uss yorktown nt
2. google china censorship
3. Tiananmen Square
4. Taiwan independence
The first term I searched was "uss yorktown nt". I seemed to get somewhat similar results on all the search engines. I found a lot of information about the USS Yorktown that was used in WWII, and about the newer Navy ship from 1982. It seemed that the Google.cn site had more information about the NT failure than the other links. However, the first few results I got on this search engine were the same as the ones I go on Google.
The second term I searched was "google china censorship". I found that Bing's search results were mostly news organization pages. I also found that Google and Google.cn had somewhat of the same search results again. I did find a lot of blog entries about this topic though. The blogs were all very opinionated as this is a subject that people have many different views on.
The third term I searched was "Tiananmen Square" which offered very different search results. The two Chinese search engines Google.cn and Baidu had a lot of information about the culture and history of the square. However when I went to Google and Bing I found more search results about the protests that have gone on in the square. It seems as if the Chinese search engines came up with more positive results than with the American search engines which also had negative ones.
The fourth term I searched was "Taiwan independence". I got results on Bing and on Google that were about the Taiwan Independence Movement, which were clearly lacking from the other two search engines. The Chinese search engines are obviously censoring the information that one can find on their sites. They seem to exclude a lot of information from them; however, you would not know this unless you viewed other search engines from other countries that may not censor as much material. It's clear there are certain things that almost any country's government does not want people to see.

Enliten Online: Open Your Mind
Ok, I know I might seem a litte bias posting my boyfriend's blog here, but recently it has become quite popular. He has a clothing company he just started a few years back with his brother and one of their other friends. The site, enliten.me, has not only an online store where you can find their Fall 2009 clothing line, but it also consists of blogs written by all three men. Each of them has their own topics such as fashion, sports, and movies that they write about and update constantly. Recenty, their company gained recognition through The Oregon Daily Emerald when there was an article written about how Enliten is not only a clothing company. All of the clothes designed have meaning behind them that they even explain on the website. Enliten encourages people to 'open their minds' to fashion, sports, music, entertainment, art, technology, etc. This is part of the reason they each have their seperate blogs on the company's website, because while you may be shopping on their online store, you can take a look at one of their blogs and learn something new about what is going on in the world. Enliten is coming out with their Spring 2010 clothing line very soon, and they hope to 'open the minds' of people who may be new to an out-of-the-ordinary clothing line that encourages people to think.

New Supwitchugirl song "Brobot". Spoof on "Jersey Shore" cast?
We all know of the rap group Supwitchugirl, the one's who recently became famous for their Oregon Football anthem "I Love My Ducks." Since "I Love My Ducks" came out, they have been working on new music. Here is one of their first new singles "Brobot". If you watch the video and listen to the lyrics, it almost seems as if the group is poking fun at the new MTV reality show "The Jersey Shore". This tv show, along with its cast, has become such a target forridicule among the media lately that it even made its way onto Saturday Night Live. Even though this may seem degrading towards these people on "The Jersey Shore", they have actually found fame from all of this attention they are getting and are not taking it for granted. Not only are they getting paid thousands of dollars simply to make appearances in night clubs, but they are also planning the second season of the show to be aired the summer of 2010 in South Beach Miami, Florida.

First Blog Entry!
I recently got sucked into seeing the new movie "Avatar." At first, I was constantly coming up with excuses not to see this movie, because I am not a fan of science fiction movies. So when I was finally forced to go see it, I was not excited at all. However, this hatred for science fiction soon passed after watching the whole movie.
It is no wonder this film took four years to make; the cinamatography and special effects are taken to a whole new level. Everything in this movie looks so life like, at times I couldn't tell what was real and what was animated. Even though this movie reportedly took 300 million dollars to create and market, some believe that Avatar could hit $1 billion in the box office. It is also now the top December grosser ever!
With all of the work, time, and money they have put into making this movie, it has been well worth it. I reccomend seeing Avatar to anyone, even those who are a bit skeptical about science fiction movies like I was. This is not one you want to miss.
